Palm Beach County professional theaters, and particularly the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, dominated this year’s Carbonell Award nominations, which were announced Wednesday.
Palm Beach companies received 62 nominations — nearly two-thirds of the total —followed by Miami-Dade with 28 and Broward with eight.
The Maltz Jupiter Theatre, last year’s big winner, looks poised to have another good year award-wise. It picked up 19 nominations, divided among five productions. And in its first year of eligibility, the adventuresome, low-budget Slow Burn Theatre Company of West Boca Raton made a fine showing, racking up 10 nominations for its mounting of the bi-polar musical, Next to Normal — the most of any production that opened in the 2013 calendar year.
Another recent theater with limited resources and playing space, Fort Lauderdale’s Island City Stage, also showed it could compete with South Florida’s best. It led the list of non-musical productions, picking up six Carbonell nominations for The Timekeepers, a dark drama of life inside a concentration camp.
In all, 15 South Florida theater companies received Carbonell nominations. In Palm Beach County, the totals were: Maltz Jupiter (19), Palm Beach Dramaworks (14), Slow Burn (10), Theatre at Arts Garage (9), Boca Raton Theatre Guild (5), Wick Theatre (3), Outré Theatre (1) and Plaza Theatre (1). In addition to Slow Burn, this was the first year of eligibility for The Wick and for Outré.
The 38th annual Carbonell Awards — named for sculptor Manuel Carbonell, who designed and produces the physical awards — will be presented Monday, March 31, at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale.
