Film: As Andy Warhol once said, we will all be famous for 15 minutes, and the corollary to that seems to be that most of us will become the subject of a documentary. At the moment, it is late night comic Conan O’Brien’s turn, featured in a breezy bio-flick called Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop, which understandably focuses on the shabby way he was treated by impatient NBC executives last year when his tenure on the lucrative Tonight Show was cut short and he was replaced by Jay Leno, the man that O’Brien had replaced. Anyway, if there is little new about that over-reported dust-up, at least the backstage view of how O’Brien works and creates his nightly show remains fascinating. Opening today at Mos’Art Theatre in Lake Park.
Theater: It look a long time for the British theater to allow women to perform onstage, and now, for the first time ever, men are appearing in a production of The Women’s Theatre Project. This earth-shattering development occurs to accommodate the world premiere of Chitterling Heights, Ann Morrissett Davidon’s account of a contentious weekend meeting between African-American literary lions Lorraine Hansberry and James Baldwin. Karen Stephens, recent Carbonell Award nominee for her one-woman whirlwind, Bridge and Tunnel, heads the cast as Hansberry. At TWTP’s home space at Sixth Star Studio in Fort Lauderdale through Aug. 28. Call (866) 811-4111 for tickets.
Music: The Argentine-born violinist Tomas Cotik was appointed second violinist of the Delray String Quartet last season, and he’s added a strong, vivid tone color to the ensemble. This weekend, he performs in recital with pianist Tao Lin in an all-Schubert concert, the first of two such programs before the works are recorded for an upcoming release. Featured are the A major Sonata (D. 574) and two late works dedicated to the violinist Josef Slavik: The Rondo in B minor (D. 895) and the Fantasy in C (D. 934). Experts such as the Schubert biographer Brian Newbould have pointed to the Rondo in particular as a piece that deserves to be much better-known, and the recital provides an unusual opportunity to hear this rewarding slice of Schubert’s work. The free-admission concert begins at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Northwest Regional Library in Coral Springs. For more information, call 954-341-3900, ext. 250.
Dance: Maria Konrad’s jazz dance company, Reach, takes a look back at the glory days of the movie industry this weekend with The Golden Age of Hollywood. Konrad’s troupe will present two performances of the show this weekend at the Eissey Campus Theatre on the campus of Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach Gardens, followed at 2 p.m. Tuesday by a community outreach performance. The shows are set for 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20, and are available from www.reachdancecompany.com, or by calling 561-339-6360.
