Theater: Every generation has an image of Peter Pan, either Mary Martin, who originated the role in the 1954 Broadway musical, or such subsequent high fliers as Sandy Duncan or Cathy Rigby. We can now add Shanon Mari Mills to that list, for her energetic, athletic and full-voiced performance at The Wick Theatre in Boca Raton. She heads a lavish production directed by Michael Ursua that features aerial effects by ZFX, Inc., vertiginous animated projections by Josieu Jean and, of course, eye-popping period and fantasy wardrobe from the Costume World warehouse. The Wick did not stint on anything — except for the pre-recorded music — and the results should captivate youngsters as well as transport adults back to their childhood. Through Aug. 30, with tickets getting scarce. Call 561-995-2333 and take a trip to Neverland.
Film: The irrepressible, undeniably regal Helen Mirren plays Queen Elizabeth II better than the queen does, first in her Oscar-winning turn in The Queen and lately onstage in Peter Morgan’s The Audience, which brought her an Olivier Award and a Tony. The play looks at the monarch’s weekly meetings with the various British prime ministers throughout her 60-year reign, being informed presumably of affairs of state, but there are no records of what actually was said, leaving Morgan free rein to make dramatic suppositions. The play is wildly out of chronological order, which gives Mirren the opportunity for tour de force transitions between scenes. The play screens at the Gables Art Cinema this week — today through Thursday, each day at 1 p.m. — through the National Theatre Live series. Tickets are $20, a mere fraction of the price of the production on Broadway. Call 786-395-9689 for reservations.
Music: Lake Worth’s historic Bamboo Room has reopened on J Street after a trial run last month persuaded its new investors that there were plenty of fans who would come out for shows. Some things are still being worked out before the season returns in October, but for now, you can catch a wide lineup of local bands this month and September. Tonight, its bluesman JP Soars at 10 p.m., preceded by folk-punk trio Killbillies at 6:30 p.m. The George Price Quintet brings smooth jazz to the venue tomorrow night at 6:30, and at 6:30 p.m. Sunday it’s Jacksonville reggae band Chillakaya.
