Weekend arts picks: May 1-May 3

As the season evaporates, several important shows are closing this weekend or in the next few days:

Art: Georgia O’Keeffe and Ansel Adams: Natural Affinities, at the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach. An important show of paintings and photographs by two leading American landscape artists, which ArtsPaper‘s Katie Deits said in January was “worth repeated viewings.” Closes Sunday. Theater: Robert Creighton takes a real star turn in Cagney!, a world premiere musical about the vaudevillian turned beloved movie star that closes Tuesday at Florida Stage in Manalapan, having added three performances after its scheduled closing Sunday. All the remaining performances are sold out, but “if you can find a way to see it, you are bound to be impressed by Creighton,” ArtsPaper‘s Hap Erstein said last month. 8 p.m. tonight, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, and 2 p.m. Wednesday. Also extending its run by two shows is Always … Patsy Cline, Ted Swindley’s 1988 revue-drama about a Houston homemaker’s friendship with Cline, the big-voiced Virginia-born country singer (Crazy, I Fall to Pieces) who died young in a 1963 plane crash. With Lisa Mills as Cline, and directed by Wendy Haley. Originally scheduled to close Sunday, it’s now playing through Saturday, May 9. Music: It’s an early-music Saturday, if you’re so inclined, with a free concert that night by the Palm Beach Atlantic University Early Music Ensemble. Michael O’Connor’s group will tackle English music written in the period from 1300-1750, including familiar tunes such as Thomas Morley’s Now Is the Month of Maying, Thomas Tallis’ If Ye Love Me, as well as William Byrd’s setting of the Ave verum corpus. Student instrumentalists are scheduled to perform works by Handel and Purcell. And on Sunday afternoon, the well-known Lynn University pianist Roberta Rust offers a program in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the death of Franz Joseph Haydn. Rust will play the F minor Variations (Hob. XVII:6), the Fantasia in C (Hob. XVII:4), and the Sonata No. 62 (in E-flat, Hob. XVI:52). Violinist Maryna Yermolenko and cellist Christine Echezabel will join her for the Piano Trio No. 39 (in G, Hob. XV:25, Gypsy Rondo), and Phillip Evans will guest at a second piano for the Brahms Variations on a Theme of Haydn (Op. 56b).
