Art: Opening this Saturday at Exor Galleries in Boca Raton is Purvis Young: Raw, which features 20 works by the 65-year old artist from Miami’s Overtown. Young, who has painted on just about anything that he finds, from discarded political signs, doors and plywood scraps to metal sheets and carpet remnants, may be considered the ultimate outsider artist.
After a rough childhood in Liberty City, Young started painting in prison. Now his paintings hang in the homes of wealthy collectors and in museums such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Studio Museum of Harlem and the American Folk Art Museum. His gestural, abstract-expressionist, colorful paintings express raw emotion while depicting his vibrant, fresh vision of the world around him.
The exhibit will run through July 30 at Exor Galleries, which is located at 291 Via Naranjas, Suites 45A and 50A in Royal Palm Place, Boca Raton Gallery hours are: Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. For more information, visit www.exorgalleries.com, or call (561) 361-7474. — K. Deits

Music: This seems to be the year for two pieces of classical music: the Mendelssohn String Quartet No. 6, one of his final works, and the Violin Sonata, Op. 18, of a young Richard Strauss. The Strauss is getting its third outing this season tonight at the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale as violinist Eugene Ugorski, accompanied by pianist Konstantin Lifschitz, perform in a recital for the Miami International Piano Festival. On the program in addition to the Strauss are the Brahms Violin Sonata No. 3 (in D minor, Op. 108), Ravel’s popular showpiece Tzigane, and the monumental Chaconne in D minor from the Second Partita of J.S. Bach. The two men also will play The Fountain of Arethusa, from the Mythes of the Polish composer Karol Szymanowski. The concert starts at 8 pm in the Amaturo Theater, and tickets are $18.
