Film: You do not need to be immersed in the world of haute couture to appreciate Valentino: The Last Emperor, a meticulous, prying documentary on the great Valentino Garavani, who has held his regal position at the top of the fashion designer pecking order for 45 years. Director Matt Tyrnauer takes us backstage at Valentino’s runway shows and into his personal life with longtime partner Giancarlo Giammetti, viewing scenes of the excess of a genius. Opening today at local theaters. — H. Erstein

Theater: This is the final weekend for New Vista Theatre’s impromptu talent show and beg-a-thon called The New Vista Variety Hour (and a ½).
