Palm Beach ArtsPaper draws on the work of an impressive lineup of veteran and rising arts journalists who have made distinctive reputations for themselves in major newspapers and magazines, and who are committed to the idea that writing about the arts is an essential part of making an arts community healthy, and by extension, improving the cultural health of this region of the country. In addition to writing regularly about art, books, classical music and opera, dance, film, jazz and pop, and theater in Palm Beach County, our team also covers arts events throughout South Florida. We believe in the long-form review, in which our writers explore arts presentations in depth, giving readers more ways to enter into the experience of the arts event.
We also provide long-form interviews with arts newsmakers — who have included actor Christopher Plummer, dancer Rasta Thomas, artist William Kentridge, filmmaker Whit Stillman, lyricist Sheldon Harnick and many others — and in 2013 began a video series, Lives of the Freelancers, in which local artists discuss how they are able to build an effective life on the local arts scene. And every October, ArtsPaper provides a comprehensive Season Preview edition that gives the most detailed overview of the local arts season to come that can be found in any regional publication, online or otherwise.
Palm Beach ArtsPaper was founded in November 2008 by a group of Palm Beach County-based arts journalists who were concerned about the disappearance of arts coverage from South Florida’s major metro newspapers as the industry was transformed by the rise of the Internet. Although we founded the paper as a Web entity, we were determined to have a print version as well, and in February 2009 began a print version of the paper that included features, excerpted reviews and calendar listings.
This publication appeared as a supplemental print magazine that was distributed with The Coastal Star and The Pompano Pelican until 2014, when the print publication was reformatted as an arts section of The Coastal Star.
